You know I feel I would be remiss if I did not mention the obvious religious parallels in this episode and also if I did not mention the obvious miss reading I did in the previous episode, well... not so much a misreading, I'll get to it.
See, there are many points in this season, when it seems that people around Oswald Cobblepot are delusional or Angry or irrational, like for example the second episode when he visits his mother, and she tells him to be her strong boy, it would seem that she is playing into her delusion and shaping her son as she wants him.
Well... it's not... It is actually Oswald's Delusion that she is playing into.
And here it would be easy to say that after everything it is actually her choice to treat him like this, but, I think saying so would be... missing that Larger context of the situation this show presents.
You see Francis had just lost two of her sons, and was insanely scared of the son she had left, besides, at that point, she had lost so much, any promise would seem like a blessing.
So yes, while the correct decision would have been the hard one, but sometimes, such hard decisions also seem, impossible.
And that is not to mention Oz's nature. He seems to have a particular proclivity towards, what is it they say, saying all the right things, to get what he wants.
And that is the main point of this episode, A man who comes as everything you want, as the solution to all your problems, and as a calming embrace, and yet, he brings nothing but Death and destruction with him, his corrupting touch influencing all around him into trickery betrayal, and deeds worse than any can imagine.
The one who roams the night disguised as an Angel leading wayward souls to Damnation, thinking it is their Salvation.
I know, that's a tad Dramatic, but it isn't far from the Truth, Remember that time I had written of the Parallels between the Penguin and Sauron?
Well those parallels weren't by coincidence, Sauron is known as the Great Deceiver, a title that he gains from him being the devil of middle earth.
The Penguin in this season, undergoes a hero's journey, except it is reversed, instead of the people around him inspiring him to be the best version of himself and in the process overcome great challenges, he inspires others to embrace their Darker half and in the process cause great Destruction.
Of course the true Tragedy of the Devil is that if he harms anyone, it is most of all himself, which is why by the end, it is due to his deeds that Oswald's Mother is bedridden and Vegetative, something which she explicitly asked him to avoid for her, but here they are.
To prove my point, let's look at what happened to Victor, episode three explicitly followed victor's Journey from his old life into his new one, as he let go of his final chance to come out of this life.
And while in the very first episode, Victor was queasy about the most basic of bad deeds, but by the end, he is cheering others on to lead a rebellion against huge crime bosses.
All the henchmen turning against their bosses because they believed that this is their only way to freedom, and hence, getting what they always wanted, or so they thought.
But what happens to Victor? He is killed, the henchmen probably locked themselves out of the best lives they could possibly have, and started working for someone who wouldn't even spare his family.
How long do you think they will last?
And the reason why Oswald kills Victor is also multifold, it seems that he clearly Values Victor, and therefore he values his opinion, so what happens when Vic finds out what Oz actually did? So better to kill him, worse, if Vic is used to blackmail him? So better to kill him.
And the show ends, with Vic only having his catatonic mother in a room and then Dancing with eve who is pretending to be his mother.
Very Creepy.
Also, look at what I said in the previous articles, Me, and many others included were indeed rooting for the Penguin, and that is due to a simple thing, the Devil is easy to root for, or rather, there's this saying, not every Wounded dog is to be helped, cause some of them are just waiting to regain strength so they can bite you.
The devil always presents himself as a victim and an underdog, and in some senses he is, he is depowered by god, fallen from the grace of being the favored one, and at the end of the day, he is essentially just a teenage rebel, who refuses to grow up and is extremely self centered but any who do the mistake of showing him sympathy, they are done for.
And if you see my last article, I did say, Oz was essentially an eternal child, and just like in the case of the Devil, it is often easy to blame god for ever creating him as such or casting him out being a cruel punishment that truly made him irredeemable, it was easy for me to blame the mother when analyzing the previous episode.
And it is essential to point out that yes, in the end they did make the choices, but that is the trickery of the Devil, and that is enough religious wish wash for today.
I personally do not agree with this depiction of an evil entity but again, I just wanted to point out the religious parallel.
