The Penguin episode 5, Legacies Change.(Spoilers)

The Falcones don't exist anymore

So, now that my previous point has been made for me, that Sofia is indeed a cold blooded killer/criminal. Let's move on.

So after turning Sofia Falcone's backstory on it's head last episode, we finally get the very next episode, in which they indeed confirm that she is the villain of the story.

Sofia is a very particular type of Antagonist, she is a Foil to the Penguin, They both have had the exact opposite experiences with both the Falcones and the Maronis, they both grew up to be something bigger than what society told them they could be, but one did it by sticking to her Morals hard, and the other by... not having any... except when it comes to Victor.

Now the thing with the Falcones becoming the Gigantes is that in the comics, the name came from Sofia marrying Rocco Gigante to combine the two families, it was a strategic move, and as well Sofia was the Hangman, she was a Serial Killer.

So while yes, the Penguin has a good foil in Sofia Gigante, in terms of Comic accuracy though this whole show is outta the window.

Not that I am complaining, Sofia is much better as a crime lord who promises to go in a different direction than a generic Serial Killer who killed her own brother.

But it does make my job harder in terms of predicting the future of what is actually going to happen, Salvator Maroni also never teamed up with Sofia in the comics. But here we are.

My belief is that they streamlined it a little bit and instead of Rocco Gigante it is Salvator Maroni, and instead of her husband he is her chosen father.

Salvator Maroni throws Acid on Harvey dent

Well Maroni is also the person who did this to Harvey Dent.

However, the point is, it would seem, that just like Sofia wanting to change the Legacy of her crime family by paying the ones on the ground instead of out of touch higher ups, the Legacy of the Character Sofia herself is changing.

But there is this saying, that the more that things change, the more they remain the same.

And nowhere is that more true with the Penguin.

The Penguin in this episode acts exactly as he always has, never loyal to anyone, thinking only about himself, and ruining others in the process, and often harming himself, like when it comes to him ruining his own batch of bliss.

But there is one key difference, everything around him has changed, he is the one in control now, he is the one calling the shots, and he demonstrates this by burning both Salvator Maroni's wife and child in one fellswoop.

The Penguin burns Nadia and Taj

And so he hasn't changed but he has changed what he is showing to the world.

Like his creepy relationship with his mother.

Now, while it is a little bit of a cliche, oh he has a bad mother, but it is more specifically about how she is a bad mother.

The idea is to show something called emotional incest, a phenomenon of someone expecting the emotional needs to be fulfilled by a child that should be fulfilled by a romantic partner, if we get our mind back to the second episode of the Penguin, we will realize when and where this started , Oz tells Sofia that after his fathers death, him and his mom danced to calm her down.

Now I will say emotional incest is a very complicated and definitely not as simple as dancing with your mom, I am just saying that is where it began.

The problem with this kind of relation with a parent is that it interferes with ones proper emotional development, and that is what wee see in Oz in droves, it is very... Joker like... see Todd, that's how you do the Joker properly.

Surprising how two DC properties so close together are so much in opposites of each other, one good, one bad, one penguin, one joker, one showing the right way to do things one not.
