Now, I don't really know why I am choosing only now to review this movie, when I watched it like last month, but here we are!
I originally chose to watch this because, Hi! I am a goth. And the trailers aesthetic really attracted me, also, Jenna Ortega is the quintessential modern Goth, sorry not sorry.
So here I am booking the ticket, and the entire theatre is empty, and I was having second thoughts immediately, because empty theatres this close to the showing only mean one thing, couples are going to book that place for... obvious reasons.
But I pushed past it, doesn't mean I still didn't see some super uncomfortable stuff, but okay...
Now one might wonder why I am even bothering to tell all this, let me tell you, an empty theatre generally means a bad movie, and talking about the stuff at the theatre is usually the more interesting thing to do, and... that was almost this movie.
But that is also not this movie.
Let me explain, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is very much so a sequel to the original eighties movie.
And that can be a very good thing, almost as many times as it can be a very bad thing.
The Original Movie was about this rebellious Goth teen who comes across this Ghost called Beetlejuice through the arduous process of being a Rebellious Goth teen.
The spirit appears when his name is called three times, which makes this movies name extra sinister because saying its full name now puts you at extreme risk of calling the bastard yourself.
And seeing that he tries to get his freedom/ come back to life by marrying you that can be... a problem.
Now seeing that that was what the old movie was about, the producers looked at the movie and said, hmm, what if we did, that.
Now generally that leads to an overall terrible experience for everyone involved but this time it doesn't because remember kids even a broken clock is right twice a day and this is one of those times, the broken clock being the producers of course.
See Beetlejuice did two major things right, which is why it ultimately ended up being a success at the box office.
It almost perfectly captures the general vibe of the original eighties movie in an era of infinite throwbacks to the eighties, it doesn't try to unnecessarily modernize it, because it was already pretty modern.
It crucially still uses lots of practical effects, keeps a lot of the earlier effects almost unchanged, and it adds more to this whacky world like the giant sand Worm.
And it grows up with its audience.
How so?
Well it flawlessly categorizes one of the key fears a parent has, will my child repeat my mistakes? Will I accidentally hold on to her too tight in an effort to keep her from doing so.
Will my past haunt my child in a way that I cannot control?
And it also perfectly categorizes the fears of being a single parent, it gives the main characters a moment which most people can only dream of, a moment with their dead family member and it does it all in the back drop of a perfect late eighties movie.
It's nostalgia in a bottle mixed with some reality of course.
My only regret though is now the studios will get the wrong message and write an entire fucking back story for the soul sucking ex of Beetlejuice, which I mean hey, long as its good.
